      The child sees the environment around him holistically and does not adjust any subject to “science” and “social science”, so it became necessary to think of compiling this book instead of two separate sections.  The curriculum aims to develop an understanding of the self-linked and interrelated proposed topics rather than a list of topics.  The book critically illustrates the physical, social and cultural contexts so that the child can be informed of the choices. 
       
     
            The challenge of writing at the national level was to reflect the multi-cultural dimensions of different classrooms.  It was imperative that the child give equal importance to every community, culture and way of life.  When the book was written, who is the child we are addressing.  That was the big question.  Is he a child of a big school in a big city or a child of a slum school, a child of a small town, a child of a village school or a child of a remote school in a mountainous region?  How do we address such a diverse group?  It needs to face diversity like caste, class, culture, religion, language, geographical situation etc.  The book addresses some of these issues, which the teacher must also address sensitively in his or her own style.
